Retiro Neighborhood Overview
Retiro is the laid back and less posh sister neighborhood of Salamanca. The Retiro neighborhood lies just south of Salamanca and east of the Retiro Park (see interactive map).
The Retiro is so huge and central that all the neighborhoods surrounding the Park could technically be linked to the Park. However, the truth is that the other neighborhoods bordering the Retiro are too posh or connected to the center to be defined by just the Park itself. The part of Madrid just east of the Retiro really lives a neighborhood life that is deeply connected to the the Retiro Park.
Life in Retiro is traditional, laid-back and still connected to the center. It is highly recommended to anyone who wants to enjoy Madrid, be right in the middle of things, live in an middle/upper-class neighborhood and still be able to escape from the city stress by going to the park anytime they want. It's also a great neighborhood for a family with kids.
Retiro neighborhood pricing
For renting and buying properties, Retiro is less expensive than the center of Madrid. The average price per square meter is 16.6€ per square meter to rent and 4572€ per square meter to purchase a property.
We recommend living in Retiro if you want to . . .
- Be connected to the center of Madrid, but live in a quiet neighborhood with an amazing park just five minutes from your place
- Live in a really authentic Madrid neighborhood where many people still live the Madrid way of life as it was years ago
Tips for apartment hunting in Retiro
Make sure to check the quality of the flat. Many buildings are really old and are not refurbished by their landlords. Apart from that, complete the standard checks we detail in 10 Things to know before renting a property in Madrid.
