Spain has quite a high unemployment rate, but there is a lot of demand for English speakers, particularly English natives who are at least bilingual or trilingual. Teaching English as a freelancer or with an academy is always an option, although it is difficult to find work over the summer months. There is also a lot of work in the communication sector. Rather on just relying on your mother tongue however, I’d definitely recommend immersing yourself in the culture in order to get as good a grasp on the language as you possibly can. Pierre has some tips on how to become fluent in just 6 months.

To avoid any nasty surprises, here you can find some information about the cost of living in Madrid and the cost of bills and utilities. This article has the rental prices that you can expect to pay in Madrid.

Hi Matt- I’ve passed your message to one of the members of our property finding team. Best, Mary Clare
Hello. I have been resident in Spain for 11 years but have just started looking to buy a property recently. I would like to buy a flat in the centre of the city, however I understand that the property prices have been and are continuing to increase quite rapidly – so am not sure if I can afford to buy within el ´centro´. I am looking for a 3-bedroom piso of reasonable to large size (exterior con ascensor) of minimum 70 or 80 m2. I work in the barrio of Valdebernardo at a ´concertada´ school on a contract ´fijo discontinuo´.
